The plan would would add 5th grade to the middle school and 8th grade to the high school. Katherine Rogers has a daughter in 6th grade. “I have a lot of concerns, I speak with a lot of parents,” Rogers, said. She’s concerned this shift would complicate the bussing system, cause confusion and put her daughter in the high school way too early. “She’s a young 6th grader when she goes into 8th grade she’s going to be 12 for eight weeks, some of the kids in the high school, the seniors, are going to be between 18 and 19 years old. I just don’t know how that is, how much interaction they’re going to have, how it’s going to work,” Rogers, explained. Katherine says she wants the district to listen to parents before making any decisions. “My hope is whatever change they do make is going to be made with minimal of uprooting students, minimal of upsetting them,” Rogers, said. Sault Area Superintendent Tim Hall says that’s the plan and they want parents involved. “We want and need the input from the community and the parents before we would ever take a final plan for the board to vote on. Lists have been provided for city council outlining mandatory and discretionary items for council to review and determine whether the various items can be eliminated or adjusted to reduce the 2018 net levy up to 20 per cent. “Many of these items have been previously considered but not adjusted by council in their 2016 and 2017 budget deliberations,” the report reads. Horsman told The Sault Star that internally, city departments have been streamlining their budget and increasing efficiencies over the past few years and that process will continue year-round. “We are basically down to the bone. If council wants to go any further, then we need to change the service profile,” he said. Areas where those reductions would take place need to be council’s decision, he said. A list of discretionary spending items and their dollar value has been presented to council. The 2018 preliminary budget to be presented Monday calls for a 2.02 per cent increase, well below that of the year prior, Horsman said. The adjustment from the initial 3.2 per cent increase is a result of the city receiving more money than expected for the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund grant. The final figures show Sault Ste. Marie will receive a grant of $15,455,200 from the province. It will receive a total of $19,410,800 benefit resulting from the provincial upload. The funding amount exceeds the city’s 2017 combined benefit by $1,774,200, resulting positively for the 2018 budget deliberations. To get to a zero percent increase, $1.9 million in spending needs to be eliminated from the budget. If city council chooses to eliminate a further per cent of the budget, then $3.8 million of discretionary spending needs to be cut, he said.
